New to Photography

Then we hope you find the answers to those frequently asked questions here

Q: I have only just started in photography, can beginners join?
A: I am a little bit intimidated by the quality of the work on the website, do you have to be experienced to join your club?
A: BPS is keen to welcome everyone, regardless of their experience and beginners are definitely welcome. We all start in the same place: the beginning. From there we learn new techniques and practical skills. BPS members will be able to offer as much or as little help and advice as you would like.

Q: I see on the website that a number of people have qualifications and it seems a bit daunting!
A: They might have them now, but they didn’t when they joined! If gaining awards is your thing, then we will help you along the way; if awards are not your thing don’t worry about it, there is no expectation that you should have or get awards. It’s all about pictures – not awards.

Q: Is it important what type of camera I have?
A: Not at all. Obviously single lens reflex (SLR) cameras offer more versatility than compact cameras, but your camera is your choice – they all take pictures and that is the important bit!

Q: How can I improve my photography?
A: By looking at pictures and showing other people your pictures. Also by talking to people about how they approach their subject and how they got a particular shot. This is what we do at BPS all the time. We have competitions where judges comment on our pictures and speakers who talk about their own photography and show us their pictures. All BPS members are willing to share their knowledge and experience.

Q: Where do you go to take pictures?
A: Some photographers prefer the solitude of working alone whilst others enjoy working in a group. BPS is a friendly club and some members may wish to go out in groups. Sometimes we organize evenings out in Bath or surrounding areas and anyone considering a trip can always ask one of the Committee to announce it on a club night. Email is used a lot to communicate within the club.

Q: Is your club all digital?
A: No. Whilst the great majority of our members use digital equipment, and traditional film and darkroom methods are in decline, members are welcome to use whatever methods they choose. There is a wealth of film, darkroom knowledge and experience available amongst the members.

Q: Do you run workshops for beginners?
A: Not on a formal basis but we do have club nights devoted to practical demonstrations or computer techniques. Members are always willing to help a new or experienced member if they have a specific expertise.

All BPS members are able and willing to help with any questions you have – just ask!

Q: Do you have darkroom facilities?
A: No, unfortunately we do not.
